Vernal Equinox 2008

March 6th, 2008 · No Comments

The vernal equinox, or official start to spring occurs this March 20th exactly at 5:48 UTC time, or 10:48 PM March 19th local time.  This is the time when the sun angle relative to the earth passes directly over the equator at 90 degrees. Equinox means “equal night” — when day and night are 12 hours long each. In reality, day is really longer at the equinox because of twilight and the sun peeking above the horizon. “Equilux” — when the days are approximately equivalent to night occurred several days ago.

Easter always falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox.

More Rain - Web Site Failover

February 22nd, 2008 · No Comments

Incoming storm this weekend should bring us in excess of a half inch of rain. Strong winds are predicted so power outages may occur again.  Since the weather site is local in EDH north, there are times when the power goes out and my UPS can’t keep the site up for more than about 20 minutes. If that should occur, the site fails over to the weather blog site here. If you are here instead of there, that’s why.

Total Lunar Eclipse 2/21

February 17th, 2008 · No Comments

A total lunar eclipse will take place on 2/20-21. This will be the last total eclipse until 12/21/2010.  This will be visible in all of North America provided the skies are clear. Unfortunately we are predicting cloudy and rainy skies. Maybe we’ll get a break enough to see some of the eclipse.

A total lunar eclipse occurs when the earth is directly between the sun and the moon, where the earth’s shadow is cast upon the moon.  From wikipedia:

Offshore Low

January 23rd, 2008 · No Comments

Offshore LowWe continue to experience an offshore low that keeps spinning moisture up from the south over this area of California. This is keeping the rain coming in over the next few days. It also fooled me today during my run. I normally look at the local radar and calculate when the rain will be overhead based on a west to east flow and find a clear sky window to go run. Today I did that but forgot the rain is coming up from the south. Oops. Got some wet today but the rain was just drizzle.

Split Jet Stream

January 21st, 2008 · No Comments

The advent of cooler and raining weather this week shows us with a double jet stream. Split Jet Stream
Typically the jet stream is a single stream from the Pacific from east to west. Today however, we can see two jets across North America. Also of note is that the stream is coming from the arctic first west to east, then east to west right over central California.
